DPI NGO Conference in Melbourne

63RD ANNUAL UNITED NATIONS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INFORMATION NON-GOVERNMENT ORGANISATIONS CONFERENCE (UN DPI/NGO)

 

Get ready Melbourne, because a momentous event in global health is arriving at your doorstep this coming Monday! Entitled “Advance global health: achieve the MDGs” this is only the third time the UN DPI NGO conference has been held outside of New York, and promises to reignite public interest in the millennium development goals. The conference provides a forum for the NGOs to discuss key issues, and will this year relate to global health and the need for improvement in health outcomes to achieve the MDGs. Adequate health care provides a platform from which the millennium development goals can be met, and without which any progress cannot be realised.

The forum also aims to engage Australia’s youth, receiving both youth delegations and hosting a range of events to promote the conference. AMSA and the IFMSA is pleased to announce that a delegation of Australian medical students will be attending the conference, and will be relaying their experiences back to you, on the blog below and on Twitter (visit http://twitter.com/amsaghn). This is an important event in the lead up to the September UN Summit on the MDGs, so don’t miss out on your opportunity to be part of one of the momentous global health forums to reach Australia’s shores.

The 63rd annual UN DPI/NGO conference has been and gone, but the AMSA and the IFMSA has certainly made a lasting impact.  Attended by over 350 NGOs from over 70 different countries, the core focus of the conference was to produce a declaration to be presented at a Special Assembly of the United Nations in New York on the 20th of September, which will focus on the millenium development goals.  AMSA and IFMSA was actively involved in these discussions, calling for measures to:

  1. Recognise the importance of human rights as well as social and environmental determinants in the MDGs
  2. Draw attention to the role of youth
  3. Ensure sustainability in health systems and all efforts to achieve the MDGs
